Films like I, Robot and A.I. have shown us the future. But when will it arrive? 

Robots can cook pasta, wash our hair and look after the sick. They can drive cars, do the vacuuming and put out fires. But making them is often more complicated than the problem they’re meant to solve, which is why more often than not, they don’t get beyond the expensive prototype stage. 

The only robots that will become part of our everyday lives will be ones we can afford. They will only become efficient assistants or emergency workers once they’ve learnt to think and act for themselves. This situation is a long way off, but our attempts to get there continue apace…
