7 things we learned from the Golden Globes 2017
1. The Oscar favourite
Musical wonderfilm La La Land broke all known Golden Globes records this year with 7 nominations and a total of 7 wins (One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest and Midnight Express previously led the table with 6 globes each.)
With this, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone and the team are off to a perfect start in 2017, and as the Globes are usually seen as a barometer for the Oscars, La La Land is now the major favourite to clean up come February 26.
2. Pitt is back!
Brad Pitt made his first major public appearance since breaking up with Angelina Jolie. He may have lost a few kilos from the ordeal, but not the support of the public. The actor received standing ovations, with Hollywood making a firm statement as to who’s side they are on right now: team Brad’s.
3. Trump drinking games
Trump drinking games can be dangerous, especially so at this year’s Golden Globes. If you had drank a shot everytime they made a joke about the President-elect, then you would have been under the table within the first 5 minutes.
4. Everyone loves the Queen
Netflix show The Crown (about the life of Queen Elizabeth II) was royally rewarded at this year’s Globes. The show won two of its three nominations, with actress Claire Foy winning a Globe for her role as the Queen, while the show also won Best Drama.
5. A new meme was born
Denzel Washington looked like he’d rather be at home on the sofa with his feet up than at one of the biggest Hollywood events of the year. The Golden Globes 2017 will forever be remembered as the year the #SadDenzel meme was created.
6. Always practise your group hugs
Did Emma Stone just become 2017’s Jennifer Lawrence with this awkwardly lovable moment? Perhaps it was the joy of the moment or the bubbly, but it seems Team La La Land forgot their hugging order as director Damien Chazelle skipped his leading lady after hugging Gosling and went straight to his wife, leaving Emma hanging, puckered lips and all.
7. Bromance is in the air
While Ryan Gosling was on his way to pick up his prize, another Ryan used the opportunity to show just how much Hollywood actors really love each other. Ryan Reynolds (who was nominated in the same category for Deadpool) took his moment of defeat to steal a bit of the limelight by planting a very special kiss on Andrew Garfield. Ee always knew Deadpool and Spidey were more than just good friends …
