If anyone knows how to make it, it’s B.Traits. The UK bass music aficionado started out in a rural Canadian town thousands of miles from London. But now she’s a fully fledged resident in the capital, has had chart hits, DJed on every continent and currently fronts one of BBC Radio One’s biggest weekly shows. Here are her top tips for success.
1. No compromise
“Only make and play music you feel passionate about 100 per cent. Do not take outside opinions on board no matter what anyone says, or what they think is cool. Have your own views about your music and do what you think is right. Trust your gut brain over your skull brain always.”
2. Ps & Qs
“Always be polite and professional. Turn up on time, be cool with everyone. That doesn’t mean let people walk all over you, but be nice. When it comes to getting your stuff out there, think about how you would want to discover somebody. That’s how I think about it. When I’m interviewing someone I always think about how I would like to be interviewed, or when I’m the interviewee what I would like to hear. When I’m making my music I think about what I would love to see in someone else.”
3. Know your craft
“Always be on top of your game in terms of performance. Real pros practice and that’s OK. Practice as much as you possibly can and be as good as you possibly can. I would play all day, every day when I started out. I would spend every waking moment practicing as a DJ. That’s how I got good really fast. I did go to school. I hated school, but I did all my work. Everything else was DJing.”
