The coolest brothers in HollywoodCasey Affleck was crowned Best Actor at the 89th Academy Awards, becoming the second Affleck after brother Ben to win an Oscar. But they’re far from the only siblings active in Tinseltown
There were few major surprises at the Oscars - the botched Best Picture announcement aside - with the pre-show favourites winning most of the categories. Casey Affleck won for his role in Manchester by the Sea, as caretaker who looks after his teenage nephew after the boy’s father dies. Affleck’s brother Ben celebrated victory in 1998 when he took home the Oscar for Best Screenplay for Good Will Hunting and again in 2013, this time for Best Film for Argo, which he directed and starred in.
With Affleck junior’s win, both he and his older brother have joined the ranks of the most successful pairs of brothers in Hollywood - although Ben picked up a less illustrious Razzie in the category “Worst Screen Couple” alongside Henry Cavill for last year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
So who are the most successful brothers in Hollywood? Here are our favourites:
- The Hemsworths
- The Francos
- The Phoenixes
- The Baldwins
- The Skarsgårds
Although they’ve missed out on major awards in their careers so far, the Hemsworth brothers boast major pulling power at the box office. Younger brother Liam Hemsworth has starred in blockbuster franchises like The Hunger Games and The Expendables. His brother Chris Hemsworth missed out on an Oscar nomination last year despite impressing in the drama In The Heart of the Sea. He’s best known for his portrayal of the Marvel hero Thor, who swings his mighty hammer for a third standalone film later this year in Thor: Ragnarok.
There’s also a third, lesser-known, Hemsworth: Luke. He’s also is an actor, although not as successful as his younger brothers. This could change, however. As well as appearing in several Australian productions, he recently starred in the 2016 hit HBO series Westworld.
At 38, James Franco has been an established figure in Hollywood for years. He made his name with his roles in a James Dean biopic and as one of Sean Penn’s lovers in Milk. For his performance as a climber who gets trapped by a boulder in 127 Hours, he scooped up an Oscar nomination. His younger brother Dave Franco is slowly building a name for himself in the Hollywood dream factory. After beginning his career with small roles in Superbad and Charlie St. Cloud, he made his breakthrough performance in 2012 buddy comedy 21 Jump Street.
Joaquin Phoenix received Oscar nominations for his magnificent performances in the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line and Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master. However, the career of his older brother River Phoenix was sadly short-lived. The promising actor - highly praised for his performances in Running on Empty and Stand by Me - died in 1993 aged just 23. Their sister Summer Joy Phoenix is married to Oscar winner Casey Affleck, although the couple separated in March 2016. The couple’s children both have names alluding to River: Indiana Soon (River once played the young Indiana Jones and was born in August) and Atticus (after a joint tape).
The four Baldwin brothers: Alec, Daniel, Stephen and William are all Hollywood stars, though Alec is by far the most successful. The elder sibling is particularly adept at comic acting, with many appearances on Saturday Night Live over the decades, as well as the award-winning sitcom 30 Rock. He received a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for his performance in The Cooler. William has appeared in a number of films, including Flatliners. Stephen starred in The Usual Suspects and Daniel acted alongside Mickey Rourke in Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man.
The sons of actor Stellan Skarsgård haven’t graced the major awards stages at this early point in their careers, but you can expect them to do so very soon. The oldest of the trio, Alexander, starred in the HBO series True Blood and the movie Legend of Tarzan. You’ll know Gustaf as nerd Floki in Vikings. Meanwhile, Bill Skarsgård plays the creepy clown Pennywise in the remake of Stephen King’s It.
