Bungeeeeee! These jumps are not for the faint-hearted

You don’t have to be crazy to take on some of the most nerve-wracking bungee jumps in the world, but it helps.

Bungee jumping is one of the most thrilling, exhilarating and sweat-inducing activities there is. The idea of hurtling yourself into the air with only the support of a bungee cord might seem unwise to some, but for adrenaline junkies, it’s a challenge they’re only too eager to overcome.

We’ve picked out five of the most spectacular bungee jumps from around the world. To succeed, you’ll need a head for heights, nerves of steel and just a little bit of madness about you.

VERZASCA DAM IN TICINO, SWITZERLAND

To take your thrill-seeking experience to the extreme, try your hand at being James Bond by soaring from the very same spot as 007 in Goldeneye. It’s among the best stunts in film history, and with a lot of courage, you can make your leap at the Verzasca Dam in Switzerland one that lives long in your memory too.

MACAU TOWER IN MACAU, CHINA

If you prefer the urban jungle to nature, your next stop should be the Las Vegas of the Far East. We are of course talking about Macau in China, where you can experience the ecstasy of the world’s highest bungee jump from a building. For the 233 metre descent from Macau Tower, with mainland China visible in the distance, you’ll be secured by a ‘second-generation bungee cord’ to ensure you fall straight, and don’t swing. BLOUKRANS BRIDGE IN TSITSIKAMMA, SOUTH AFRICA

The highest commercial bridge jump in the world is on South Africa’s amazing Garden Route, a place of natural beauty with a range of vegetation and wildlife. That’s not what you came here for though: you’re jumping from the 216 metre tall Bloukrans Bridge, and everything else is going to become a blur whilst you plummet to the earth. If Jack Osborne and Prince Harry can do it and survive, then you can too.

NEVIS BUNGY IN QUEENSTOWN, NEW ZEALAND

It’s the highest bungee jump in New Zealand and half the battle is getting to the top; you drive up a rough mountain road for what feels like an eternity before you finally reach the Nevis Gorge.  At an altitude of 134 metres you arrive at a cabin suspended over the abyss, which you can only get to via an open-air cable car. You then get to experience eight seconds of freefall and feel more alive than ever before.

VICTORIA FALLS BRIDGE BETWEEN ZAMBIA AND ZIMBABWE

In no man’s land, between Zambia and Zimbabwe, you jump from an old railway bridge 111 metres above the crocodile-infested Zambezi River. In your ears rings the crash of the mighty Victoria Falls, known by locals as “the smoke that thunders”, and the last thing you see before you leap into the air is the spectacular vista of nature all around you. A remarkable location for you to find out what you’re really made of.
