Looking ahead to next year’s slate of Hollywood blockbusters, 2017 promises to be a vintage year for lovers of the multiplex. Whether you’re a zombie lover, a gearhead or a superhero fan, there’s something for everyone

Thanks to the growing popularity of streaming services, our viewing habits have gone under a mini revolution. The film industry feared that the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime would hurt cinemas, and between 2012-2014, the UK’s cinemas were shedding between seven and eight million attendees a year. In 2015, though, attendances went up, largely thanks to blockbusters delivered by Marvel and Star Wars. Thanks to an enticing batch of upcoming big screen outings, this trend could be set to continue well into 2017. Here’s what cinemagoers can look forward to in the new year.

Are you ready for:

  • Space battles
  • Amazon women
  • Knights
  • Justice
  • and much more

Star Wars: Episode VIII

The sequel to last year’s much-praised revival of the Star Wars franchise won’t hit the silver screen until December 2017, but the first teaser trailer has already whet fans’ appetites as they gear up for another intergalactic battle between good and evil. Little is known about the film’s plot so far, but it should pick up from where the first film left off, as Rey meets the long-lost Luke Skywalker after an awakening of the Force.  In the meantime, fans can enjoy Rogue One, the first of a series of Star Wars anthology films.

Wonder Woman

Following 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, the inter-connected DC Extended Universe is well and truly underway, ready to take on Marvel’s Cinematic Universe with all guns blazing. The latest film in the franchise is a modern reboot of Wonder Woman, starring Gal Godot as Diana of Themyscira, an Amazonian warrior and the demigoddess daughter of the god Zeus. Wonder Woman is renowned for her superhuman strength and acrobatic fighting skills and wields her golden lasso to take down the bad guys. She makes her return to UK cinemas on 2 June 2017.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

The story of King Arthur and his legendary sword Excalibur was told on screen as recently as 2004, starring Clive Owen and directed by Antoine Fuqua. The latest version of this classic tale, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, will be directed by cult filmmaker Guy Ritchie and is scheduled to be released worldwide on 12 May 2017. If the trailer is anything to go by, it will be a fist-fighting, testosterone-pumping affair starring Sons of Anarchy’s Charlie Hunnam, more in line with Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes reboot and classic 90s Brit-flick Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels than the medieval period interpretations that have come before.

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Jack Sparrow … sorry … Captain Jack Sparrow will be taking to the seas for a 5th time in 2017 and he’ll be joined by Orlanda Bloom’s Will Turner as well. It looks like he’s going to need it to go up against Javier Bardem’s Capitán Salazar.

Justice League

If Wonder Woman wasn’t enough for your DC Universe fix, then November will sort you out when the Justice League hits cinemas around the world. Judging by the trailers, this one looks like it is going to be one hell of a ride, but there’s still a long way to go until the release.
