The first official Doctor Strange Trailer is here, but who is he?
Things are about to get strange in the Marvel universe, Doctor Strange that is. Judging by this very first look at the next instalment of superhero goodness dropping, it promises to be a very different animal to previous Marvel films. But who is Doctor Strange and what does he do?
According to the synopsis: “After his career is destroyed, a brilliant but arrogant and conceited surgeon gets a new lease on life when a sorcerer takes him under his wing and trains him to defend the world against evil.“ Imagine Marvel meets Inception with a little sprinkling of Batman Begins and you have a good idea about what to expect.
Packing a host of heavy Hollywood hitters including Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Stephen Strange, Rachel McAdams, Mads Mikkelsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Tilda Swinton, Doctor Strange will hit the cinemas on November 4th.

Who is Doctor Strange, and why should we be bothered?
So you’ve seen the trailer and heard a bit of the hype, but you can be forgiven for not really knowing who he actually is. Doctor Strange, also known as the Sorcerer Supreme, is earth’s primary protector against magical and mystical threats and one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel universe. He had his comic debut in 1963 and has since gone on to be one of the most iconic Marvel comic book characters. He even made it into the top 35 of IGN’s “Top Avengers” list in 2012.
So it’s about magic?
Yep, this one is all about mystical powers and magic. It will be the first Marvel film to really dive deep into the realm of magic, so this is very much unknown territory for both the studio and fans alike. Will it be a hit? Only time will tell.
Who is Chiwetel Ejiofor playing?
The British actor treated us to some pretty ominous stares in the trailer, and we can expect much worse from him come November as he takes on the role of Doctor Strange’s arch nemesis, Baron Mordo. Mordo is a gifted magician, adept in the black arts of magic and was also trained by Strange’s mentor, “The Ancient One” (Tilda Swinton).
The Ancient One?
Yes, very ancient indeed. Tilda Swinton has gone all out Demi Moore for this role, shaving her head to play Stephen Strange and Mordo’s mentor in the film. The Ancient One has been alive for over 500 years according to the comics, so it is fair to say that she (or he, as in the comics) has seen and done pretty much everything.
What about Mads Mikkelsen and Rachel McAdams?
We’ve only been given slight glimpses of them, and their roles have yet to be officially released, but the money seems to be on McAdams playing Night Nurse. The studio remains very tight-lipped on Mads, but some sources claim that may well be the main villain.
