The many sides of Scarlett Johansson
Scarlett Johansson is one of the biggest names in Hollywood. The now-32-year-old has been making people sit up and take notice from an early age, since acting at 14 alongside legend Robert Redford in 1998’s The Horse Whisperer before driving Bill Murray crazy in 2003’s Lost in Translation.
Now the highly adaptable actress appears as a human-cyborg hybrid in the live-action adaptation of the manga classic Ghost in the Shell. This time the black-haired Johansson, aka Major Motoko Kusanagi, takes on the future’s dangerous criminals and extremists.
Although Johansson has missed out on the big awards, she is considered one of cinema’s most versatile performers. For example, in the Coen Brothers’ 2001 film noir homage The Man Who Wasn’t There, she played a lawyer’s teenage daughter Birdy who is not as innocent as she pretends to be.
Then in 2011’s family film We Bought a Zoo, Johansson proved that she can also tackle the role of a burly-looking animal keeper, who trudges through the enclosures in chunky boots.
From comedies like The Perfect Score and He’s Just Not That Into You to dramas like The Girl with a Pearl Earring and The Other Boleyn Girl, to science fiction blockbusters Lucy and Marvel’s The Avengers, the New Yorker has showcased her skills without restricting herself to one genre or a particular role.
Her special aura has also not escaped the attention of master director Woody Allen who declared Johansson his muse, casting her in three films. Her roles in Match Point, Scoop and Vicky Cristina Barcelona were quite complex, while Allen has previously referred to the half-Danish Johansson as “sexually overwhelming”. “The minute she walks on the set, the amperage goes up 200 points,” Allen said in an interview with MTV.
And Johansson’s resourcefulness doesn’t end on the set or the stage, where she has also excelled. Her regular changes in appearance never detract from her beauty. The starlet is currently sporting an edgy short haircut which she recently showed off at a gala in New York.
The judges of the magazine FHM would seem to agree. They twice named the actress as their choice for the title of “Sexiest Woman Alive”. And it’s not hard to see why.
Ghost in the Shell is out in cinemas worldwide from March 29.
