Sports stars and their cool cars

Full throttle: sports stars and their cool cars

Only a lucky few can afford the most beautiful and expensive cars in the world. And plenty of those who can come from the sporting world.

They’re among the best in their chosen field and they are handsomely rewarded for their talents. Footballer Cristiano Ronaldo sits top of the list of the highest paid athletes in the world with a cool £60.9 million. So what do athletes like CR7 spend their small change on? Fast cars of course.

Here are some of the coolest chariots of sports’ elite:

Cam Newton

As the NFL’s current MVP, Cam Newton is worth his weight in gold. That’s about 111 kilos. So it’s no surprise to see how the American football star has pimped out his 1970 Oldsmobile 442 Cutlass. The classic car is custom plated with real 24 karat gold and platinum details. In addition, the tyres include gold-gilded rims. What’s the material value of the car after these ‘upgrades’? Only Newton can say. But the look is priceless.

Cristiano Ronaldo

This is the centrepiece of football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo’s considerable car collection. The Real Madrid icon indulged himself by buying a Bugatti Veyron after winning the European Championship in France. With a top speed of 255 mph, this is said to be the world’s fastest road car, and only cost the Portuguese kicker a measly £1.7 million.

Coming back home🔝👌😜

Lewis Hamilton

It makes perfect sense that a three-time Formula 1 world champion has a decent selection of supercars parked in the garage at home. The showpiece: Hamilton’s Pagani Zonda 760 ‘LH’, a unique specially-made model branded with the initials of the Formula 1 pilot. Hamilton’s Zonda comes with a modified V12 engine from Mercedes and 760 HP under the hood. And it costs a whopping £1.6 million.

Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr. probably has the biggest collection of expensive cars of any sports star. Not only does he have numerous Rolls-Royce, Mercedes, Ferrari and Lamborghinis, he’s also got - attention, Cristiano - two Bugatti Veyrons to call his own. However, the greatest treasure of his collection might be the Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita. The £3.4 million machine is one of only two such models in the world. There’s a reason they call him ‘Money’ Mayweather.

Leicester City Football Club

They were the surprise team of last season’s Premier League. Underdogs Leicester City left all others behind as they raced to the title, including wealthy clubs like Sheikh-owned Manchester City and Roman Abramovich’s Chelsea. And Foxes owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha was no slouch when it came to showing his gratitude. He gifted 19 players a BMW i8 in the club’s colours. The supercars cost around £100,000 each but it seems the squad had difficulty telling their motors apart. So some have had new paint jobs.
