The craziest eating competitions in the world
It’s one thing demolishing your daily calorie limit by gorging on an all-you-can-eat buffet, but competitive eating contests are on another level of over-indulgence. For a start, there’s the ticking of the clock to ensure the pressure is always on, while professionals develop new speed eating techniques each year to stay one step ahead of their rivals. There’s a whole range of different culinary races around the world, too, and let’s just say some of them don’t involve the tastiest delicacies.
These are the weirdest eating competitions on the planet:
The annual Testy Fest has been running for over three decades in Montana, USA. This one does exactly what is says on the tin, as contestants chow down on as many bull testicles as they can in four minutes. The festival is the largest of its kind in the world, and entrants must be 20 or over. Beer stalls and live bands are also on hand to help visitors wash down and, err, celebrate their achievements.
Mayonnaise Eating Competition
If you’re the kind of person who secretly spoons mayonnaise directly from the jar, then we have the perfect competition for you: the Gluten Bowl. Broadcast by Fox in the USA in 2002, professional speed eaters competed over a range of disciplines, including a mayonnaise eating competition. Each bowl contained 32 ounces of the white stuff, and the winner, Oleg Zhornitskiy, ate empty four cups within eight minutes - the equivalent of 3.6 kg of mayo. This is what we call a strong stomach!
The World Garlic Eating Competition
Now for a homegrown festival, the World Garlic Eating Competition. This is held each year in Chideock, Dorset. In 2014, contestant David Greenman won by chomping on 33 raw cloves of Iberian garlic in 60 seconds. We just feel sorry for his significant other.
Jalapeño Eating World Championship
To many of us, the sight of the Tabasco bottle has us running a mile. Others can’t get enough of all things spicy. If you like things hot, the Jalapeño Eating Contest in Texas is just the thing for you. Back in 2007, Patrick Bertoletti set a new world record when he scoffed 275 chillies in under eight minutes!
Pattaya Crocodile Egg Eating Contest
The Pattaya Crocodile Egg Eating Contest is held annually in Thailand, and contests have to swallow 10 reptile eggs in the shortest time possible - usually in under five minutes. A word of warning though, if you do decide to enter, it’s probably best to make sure the mother crocodile doesn’t get wind of it!
