Top rally talent Elfyn Evans reveals the rally drivers that inspired him to get behind the wheel and test his own limits

Elfyn Evans may be the newest face in the World Rally Championship, but having earned his place in the sport’s toughest contest with wins at every other level, the 25-year-old Welshman is ready to rise to the challenge of the premier leagues, competing against motorsport stars. These are the drivers that inspired him to get behind the wheel.

Gwyndaf Evans – former British Rally Champion

“I know it might sound cheesy, but I always followed my dad’s career. I never really followed anyone else up until I started competing myself. I’d go with my uncle to watch him any time I could when I was young. One of my earliest memories of rally is watching him at the Isle of Man when I was five or so, driving an F2 Kit Car, it was great. So he made rally part of my life.”

Sébastien Ogier – reigning World Rally Champion

“The most recent rally icon for me is Séb Ogier, as a driver who has made it through the ranks without family financial backing. He came through by being a talent and working his way up into becoming a rally winner, and then a world champion. I’d say he will win it again this year, so he’s a big influence.”

Sébastien Loeb – nine-time World Rally Champion

“You have to admire what Loeb’s achieved in his career. No-one else achieved that level of domination and it’s pretty inspirational. A lot of the modern drivers try to replicate aspects of Loeb’s driving techniques, as I think he’s changed the way cars are driven and set up. I’d sit and watch his performances for hours. He’s really the only one who’s managed to apply track racing technique to rally, and be successful in both.”
