From Roy Makaay to Alessandro Del Piero, these are the fastest goals ever scored in the UEFA Champions League

Whether it’s on the unforgiving concrete of a school playground or the perfect green of Europe’s best stadiums, teams want one thing: the all important 1-0 lead. There’s nothing more satisfying than taking the lead in a match, especially if that happens in the first minute of the game, or even better – the first few seconds.

It just so happens to be ten years since the fastest goal in Champions League history hit the back of the net. Roy Makaay needed only 10.12 seconds to give Bayern Munich the lead against Real Madrid.

That record still stands today, but only just. Here are the five fastest goals in Champions League history.

AC Milan’s star-studded team were one of the greatest on the planet at the time and some teams often couldn’t handle their speedy attacking threat. Schalke 04 were too slow out of the blocks in 2005 when they gave Clarence Seedorf a little too much room at the edge of the box to fire off a speculative shot that caught goalkeeper Frank Rost off guard. But the home team were able to recover from the early shock and the match ended 2-2.

4. Alessandro del Piero - 20.12 Seconds

Del Piero enjoyed his visits to the ‘Theatre of Dreams’, so much so that he needed just over 20 seconds to hit the onion bag in 1997. It wasn’t enough for his team though as they lost 3-2 in the end.

3: Gilberto Silva - 20.07 Seconds
Arsenal vs PSV Eindhoven. 25.09.2002

Gilberto Silva was never really known for being a prolific goal scorer, but he needed just 20 seconds to send Arsenal on the way to victory against PSV in 2002 after a wonderful play from Thierry Henry, who went on to score two himself in the 4-0 win.

2: Jonas - 10.96 Seconds
Valencia vs Bayer 04 Leverkusen. 01.11.2011

While we’re on the topic of assists, the second fastest goal in Champions League history has to go down to the poor goalkeeping from Bernd Leno. His mistake in the first 10 seconds set the tone for the rest of the match, as his side lost 3-1 to Valencia.

Real Madrid go down in the history books as having conceded the fastest goal ever, despite kicking off the game themselves. A mistake by Roberto Carlos led to los Blancos losing possession, and the rest is history. The win over the Galácticos was the highlight of a very disappointing season for Bayern, as they crashed out in the next round against AC Milan and finished fourth in the Bundesliga.

It just goes to show that a lot can change in ten years, but Roy Makaay is still number one.
