The young guns to watch out for at EURO 2016The big stars are ready for the highlight of the summer, but there are plenty of rough diamonds to discover who could prove the sensations of the finals. These are the five you really need to know about to impress your friends
Cristiano Ronaldo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thomas Müller and the rest. The big names at Euro 2016 are well known, while junior starlets such as England’s Dele Alli or Germany’s Leroy Sané have already made their mark in some of Europe’s biggest leagues. But there are other young talents who have remained a little under the radar so far and aim to draw attention to themselves at the festival of football in France. Here are some of the most promising prospects and below you will find out why you need to keep your eye out for them:
- Emre Mor
- Breel Embolo
- Ondrej Duda
- Arkadiusz Milik
- Oleksandr Zinchenko
1 Breel Embolo
The Swiss international with Cameroonian roots currently calls FC Basel home - but for how long? The striker is on the shopping list of major clubs like Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool and Germany’s Borussia Gladbach. A strong Euro 2016 would see the market value of the 19-year-old increase even more. The athletic goalscorer will look to raise some eyebrows and increase his international tally at the finals.
2 Emre Mor
The speedy attacker is the youngest player in the Turkey squad at just 18 and will play in the Bundesliga next season for Borussia Dortmund. The German giants recruited the young technician just before the start of Euro 2016 from Danish first division side FC Nordsjaelland. Mor played for the Danes up to under-19s but now plays in the Turkish colours where he’ll aim to make a major impact in France.
3 Ondrej Duda
The 21-year-old attacking midfielder is part of the talented Slovakia squad who will face England at Euro 2016. He currently plies his trade for Polish side Legia Warsaw and football experts from across Europe have been impressed by the silky skills and speed of the youngster. It is no surprise that clubs are already hovering, with Arsenal said to be lining up a bid for the tattooed whirlwind.
4 Arkadiusz Milik
Arkadiusz Milik has already had an eventful career despite only being 22. First he was hyped as the next Robert Lewandowski, and then denounced by the media a little later as a “Poland flop”. His stint in the Bundesliga, where he ran aground with Bayer Leverkusen and FC Augsburg remains an unhappy blip in his journey. But with Ajax the Polish tank has made a stunning breakthrough and now there is speculation over a move to England after the Euros. No less than surprise champions Leicester City are hotly tipped as a potential new employer.
5 Oleksandr Zinchenko
The blonde Ukrainian is the youngest goalscorer of all time for his country and his rise to prominence has naturally drawn comparisons to his legendary compatriot Andriy Shevchenko. The midfielder currently plays for Russian club FC Ufa, but that will surely change soon. The 19-year-old is bursting with talent and speculation persists that Pep Guardiola will bring Zinchenko to his new club Manchester City.
