The transfer market is an inexact science. As this quiz will remind you, for every Gareth Bale there are ten José Dominguez…

Tottenham Hotspur’s motto is ‘Audere est Facere’. Assuming you’re not a student of Latin, we’ll translate it for you. It means, ‘To dare is to do’.

As football club mottos go, it’s one of the more swashbuckling. Even if you don’t find it inspiring, you have to concede that it’s better than Gillingham’s bafflingly rubbish ‘Domus clamantium’, which simply means ‘Home of the shouting men’. At least Tottenham’s is a philosophy.

However, looking back over the last 20 years of Spurs’ transfer activity, it seems the club mantra has been applied a little too literally to the business of signing players.

Spurs have dared to sign plenty of players, certainly. It’s just that not all of them have necessarily done anything. For the really bad ones, the home fans could be forgiven for turning White Hart Lane into the true Domus clamantium.

  • Spurs’ record signing is Érik Lamela, who cost £30million from Roma in 2013
  • The club’s record fee received is for Gareth Bale, also in 2013, who cost Real Madrid a then-world record £86.3million

Can you tell your Reto Ziegler from your Mauricio Taricco? If so, you’ll enjoy getting stuck into our Spurs ‘lost XI’ quiz.

Good luck! And remember, to dare is to do! Just don’t dare to sign Paul-Jose Mpoku, if you can help it.
