sean Connery as James Bond

A quip for all seasons

James Bond’s witty remarks have achieved cult status, but are they still relevant?
“That’s quite a nice little nothing you’re almost wearing”

True sex appeal requires an element of mystery. In these days of YouPorn, the gentleman prefers the tingling sensation that comes with using Tinder.

Roger Moore as James Bond

Felicca: “You are very suspicious, Mr Bond”
Bond: “Oh, I find I live much longer that way”

Roger Moore, The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)

The Cold War may be over, but the secret services remain as curious as ever. A gentleman never posts anything about his sex life.

Pam Bouvier: “Oh god, it’s Heller!”
(after Heller’s corpse comes through a wall impaled on the tines of a forklift truck)
Bond: “Yeah, looks like he came to a dead end.”
Timothy Dalton in License to Kill (1989)

A gentleman must never forget his humour. The one-liners were never far away at the end of the 80’s during Dalton’s short-lived career as Mr Bond.

Pierce `Brosnan as James Bond

Banker: “I’m giving you the opportunity to walk out with the money, Mr Bond”
Bond: “I’m giving you the opportunity to walk out with your life”

Pierce Brosnan, The World is Not Enough (1999)

First, a gentleman is incorruptible. Second, in the aftermath of the banking crisis, it’s time the balance of power was turned on its head.

Vesper Lynd: “It doesn’t bother you? Killing all those people?”
Bond: “Well, I wouldn’t be very good at my job if it did.”
Daniel Craig in Casino Royale (2006)

Sometimes a gentleman must do, what a gentleman must do. That was very much the case for Daniel Craig’s darker, more vulnerable take on the gentleman spy.
