5 of the weirdest goals……and the strangest explanations for them
There have been some very strange goals over the years. One of the strangest came recently in the UEFA Europa League match between Rapid Vienna and FC Viktoria Plzeň. The home team’s forward Philipp Schobesberger found himself one on one with ‘keeper, and only had to round him to slot into an empty net. What happened instead is almost beyond belief – but see for yourself.
Here are some of the most curious goals ever scored, and the peculiar explanations behind them.
1. Bernd Hölzenbein - Eintracht Frankfurt 1979
“That was definitely no coincidence. People wrote at the time that the ball just happened to land on my head, but that’s not true. I intentionally headed that ball home…I just happened to be sitting down at the time.”
2. Darren Bent - Sunderland 2009
“We’ve seen plenty of examples recently of shots that were going wide being deflected in and at least mine was heading for the middle of the goal”
3. Tomislav Piplica - Energie Cottbus 2002
“I was 100% certain that the ball was going to go over the net, or at least hit the bar. It was quite windy though, and it just kind of happened”
4. Dion Dublin vs. Shay Given - Coventry City 1997
“Shay Given, the only Irishman who doesn’t know where Dublin is” (Manchester Evening News headline)
5. Philipp Schobesberger - Rapid Vienna 2015
“A wondergoal. Of course it was intentional! No, to be honest I wanted to move the ball to my right but I slipped and somehow my left foot guided it into the back of the net”
