Forget virtual reality – soon you’ll be able to experience the Fast and Furious saga first hand. This won’t be on a TV or cinema screen either, but in an arena near you

Universal Pictures is taking the much-loved (and highly lucrative) blockbuster Fast and Furious franchise on tour around the world. It is expected to kick off in January 2018, and the shows will be made in association with Brand Events, who previously put together Top Gear Live events for BBC Worldwide

Co-producer James Cooke-Priest has described the tour as “the most spectacular live-automotive production in history.” The live shows will feature some of the fastest and most unusual cars from all eight films and boast the type of breathtaking and seemingly-impossible stunts that have seen the series generate more than £3bn in worldwide ticket sales so far.

On the Fast and Furious Live homepage, the organisers promise: “You’ll feel the heat from flaming, nitrous-charged exhausts, marvel at mind-blowing vehicular acrobatics and wonder “how’d they do that” as scene after scene unfolds with the most immersive, entertaining technology imaginable.”

The Fast and Furious Live tour is expected to travel around the globe for at least five years. However, there’s disappointment for any fans of the franchise hoping to see their favourite stars in the flesh.

The likes of Vin Diesel, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Michelle Rodriguez won’t be part of the event. “The stars of the show are the cars,” insist the organisers.

The Fate of the Furious

The eighth film in the franchise, The Fate of the Furious, arrives in UK cinemas on 14 April, and will be helmed by F. Gary Gray, who directed Straight Outta Compton.

Although this is Gray’s first Fast and Furious film, he has plenty of experience with cars in action flicks, having directed the 2003 high-speed heist remake of The Italian Job.

Apart from the late Paul Walker, most of the franchise’s stars are on board for the eighth outing. Its cast includes Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Jason Statham, Kurt Russell, Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson and Jordana Brewster. Even Hollywood A-Lister Charlize Theron is getting in on the act, making her series debut. The Oscar winner plays criminal Cipher, who seduces Dom (Diesel) and recruits him into working against and betraying his friends.

The rest of the gang have to work together to bring Dom back to the good side.
