Almost 14 years have gone by since the last time Lara Croft went on a big screen treasure hunt. In 2013, the tenth video game of the Tomb Raider series appeared, and at last, in 2018 the heroine is coming back to the movies!
A look at the new Lara Croft
Alicia Vikander plays the young archaeologist in the lead role, and recently the first pictures from the set dropped giving a hint of what we can expect next year. If you’re asking yourself, Alicia who? Find out all about the new Lara Croft.
The 29-year-old Vikander comes from Sweden where she was first seen in opera productions and television series. Having starred in several Swedish films, she soon gained international fame. Her Hollywood career began with the film Anna Karenina alongside Keira Knightley and Jude Law. She also appeared in The Fifth Estate about WikiLeaks, and acted in the remake of The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
She knows something about her craft
Vikander is both beautiful and a convincing actress as she has already proved on numerous occasions. The Swede received several nominations for her portrayal of a female android in Ex Machina, and won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role as painter Gerda Wegener in Tom Hooper’s The Danish Girl.
Action films also appear in Vikander’s filmography. In addition to The Man from U.N.C.L.E., she starred in the recent Jason Bourne movie. She’s also been able to take plenty of lessons from her boyfriend. He is none other than Assassin’s Creed actor Michael Fassbender, whom she met in 2014 during the shooting of The Light Between Oceans.
Personal coach Magnus Lygdback ensures Vikander is in the shape of her life for the filming of Tomb Raider. He recently posted an Instagram photo of his protégé’s legs taken in South Africa, giving just a glimpse of her well-toned physique. It’s no wonder as Lygdback has also helped sculpt the body of True Blood actor Alexander Skarsgård among others.
When Vikander steps into the typical outfit of tight t-shirt, shorts and boots, she is following in some big footsteps. Angelina Jolie became a breakthrough international star after her role in 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. The second part Lara Croft: Tomb Raider - The Cradle of Life also had the movie studio’s coffers ringing although critics were not so impressed with Jolie’s performance the second time around.
Now Hollywood is resetting the dial. The Tomb Raider reboot - like the game version of 2013 - is dedicated to the young Lara Croft. In the search for her father, the audience will not only see the adventurer in action but also get a better understanding of the character.
Vikander suits this role to a tee. Not only will she make a gorgeous Lara, but the development of the young explorer to a tough woman will be totally believable.
Tomb Raider is set for a March 2018 release. Until then, we can occupy ourselves by replaying the old game a few more times.
