Star Wars vs Star Trek

We once again try to answer the unanswerable. This time, which franchise is better: Star Wars or Star Trek?

It is a debate which has been going on for decades, and doesn’t look like ending anytime soon. Until now that is. We’ve compared some of the key elements of both franchises and it turns out there is one very clear winner. But do you agree?

What Happened To These Star Wars Actors

Jake Lloyd retired from acting in 2001, with Anakin Skywalker the only role to his name. Stress and bullying were the reasons he gave for not wanting to continue his career as an actor, but he still continued to visit comic events and Star Wars conventions, giving interviews like the rather awkward one above.

Fan Power

While the force is strong with the Star Wars fan base, they pale in comparison to the die-hard trekkers and the many conventions held around the world. Live long and prosper!

Box Office Pull

There is only one winner when it comes to the box office. While Episodes 1-3 may have been massive turkeys as far as quality goes, there is no doubting that they brought in the cash. In total, Star Wars has taken in almost $4,486,158,822 worldwide. Star Trek, on the other hand, has only managed a “paltry“ $2,209,965,000. The Force Awakens has also broke records before it had even hit the cinemas. The film sold more tickets on the first day of going on sale than any other film, outselling the last record holder The Hunger Games eight times over.

Iconic characters

Darth Vader or Kirk, Obi Wan or Scotty, Luke or Bones? While both films have created unforgettable characters over the years, Star Wars gets the nod in this category simply because of the vastness of the universe and the creativity put into their characters. But the less said about Jar Jar Binks the better…

The Ships

Yes, the Starship Enterprise may be an elegant piece of work to boldly go where no one has gone before, but given the choice between that and the Millenium Falcon, you’re going to go for the Falcon every time. It’s like the choice between the good guy in the Prius who will most definitely impress your parents with his knowledge on foreign politics and diplomacy, or the bad boy in the 1968 Ford Mustang GT. No real contest.

Merchandise

Again, this one looks like men against boys. Men with lots and lots of money to fork out on the 1,000s of collectables released every year. The franchise has raked in over $20 billion in merch revenue since the first film. Star Trek has never really marketed their merch on the same scale as Star Wars, but they have made a fair amount over the years as well…

Soundtrack

Who doesn’t feel the hairs on the back of their neck stand to attention when the Star Wars theme song comes on and the story scrolls across the screen? John Williams is a master composer, and he created some of the most iconic film music pieces ever on Star Wars.

A clear win in the end for Star Wars, if you don’t agree with us, then let us know your opinion on Facebook. Until then, put your headphones on, turn it up loud, and let those goosebumps take over.
