In a career spanning over 30 years, Tom Cruise has starred in some of the biggest box office smashes. Films like Top Gun, Rain Man, Born on the Fourth of July, A Few Good Men, The Last Samurai, and the Mission Impossible series have made him an icon around the world.
From blockbusters to memorable quotes to life off-set, here’s why Tom Cruise is one of the biggest stars on the planet.
Show him the money
Cruise’s turn as sports agent Jerry Maguire won him a Golden Globe award in 1997. And this scene with co-star Cuba Gooding Jr. gave us one of the most memorable quotes in cinema history. “Show me the money” was named in the American Film Institute’s top 100 movie quotes of all time. Another line from the film, “You had me at hello” also made the list. Cruise received an Academy Award Best Actor nomination for his famous role.
He doesn’t hang around when it comes to making blockbusters
It was a much loved television series from the 1960s but when Mission Impossible was given the Tom Cruise star treatment, it rocketed into the stratosphere. Cruise first played IMF agent Ethan Hunt in the 1996 cinema reboot where his cable drop scene stole the show. It’s since been parodied in everything from Shrek to Father Ted. Mission Impossible spawned four sequels and the series has earned more than $2 billion worldwide.
“This mission just got a hell of a lot more impossible”
Cruise is sometimes known for having an intense personality but he’s not afraid to poke fun at himself. This parody with Ben Stiller was made for the 2000 MTV Movie Awards. Stiller played Tom Cruise’s loyal stuntman, so devoted to his hero that he legally named himself Tom Crooze. And real life mirrored Stiller’s admiration for the Hollywood star. He cut short his own honeymoon to shoot the hilarious spoof with Cruise.
Proof that it’s not all explosions and car chases, Cruise is able to bring that funny side to the cinema screen too. He played another world-famous spy when he cameoed as Austin Powers but it was his scene-stealing role as Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder that confirmed Cruise is actually a comedy genius. Look at those moves.
Lights, camera, action
It seems like Cruise is trying to outdo his last hair-raising stunt with every new role he takes on. With films like Minority Report, Collateral, War of the Worlds, Oblivion, Jack Reacher, and of course Mission Impossible, the actor has raised the bar, then swung from it, for those who get hands on with the part. He is renowned for performing a huge amount of his own stunts. And Cruise seems to be a real-life action star away from the set, keeping incredibly fit by doing things like motorcycle riding, snowboarding, climbing, and hiking. No wonder he looks so natural in the face of danger.
Time for his fans
He might be one of the biggest actors in the world but Cruise is also famous for being incredibly generous with his fans. He can spend hours at his film premieres chatting, signing autographs, and taking selfies with his legions of followers. In fact, he is so loved that Japan declared October 10, 2006, “Tom Cruise Day” in his honour because he had made more trips to Japan than any other Hollywood star.
