5 Things You Didn’t Know About FleaThe Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist lets loose on beekeeping, Pipi Longstocking and other secret passions of his
Having sold 80 million albums with his band Red Hot Chili Peppers, it’s obvious that Michael ‘Flea’ Balzary is one of the most successful musicians of all time. It’s not a secret either that the 53-year-old is one of the most creative and lauded bass players in rock history.
But are you aware that Flea cultivates the hobby of beekeeping in order to relax? Here are five things you probably didn’t know about the rock icon.
1 FLEA IS AN EXPERT IN REAL ESTATE
“It’s funny, when I was a kid and we used to play Monopoly. And my whole economic philosophy since I started making money is that I always based everything on Monopoly. Because it’s the only financial lessons I ever had.
I always thought: ‘Whoever has the most property wins.’ So I’ve always just bought property with money that I’d made. I don’t have stocks or anything. I don’t really know how it works. But, you know, I got some places.”
2 FLEA IS A BEEKEEPER
“I love my bees. In the beginning I only had one box in each hive, now I have 20. Once a month I put on my bee suit and go outside and check everything. Bees are fascinating. And they’re symbolic of everything that is great. They’re so selfless, they do their jobs so well, they live to serve the whole. Their intelligence is amazing. I love my bees.”
3 FLEA HAS DAVID BOWIE TATTOO ON HIS LEFT ARM
“Bowie was such an integral part of my childhood, and all of our childhoods. He’s the guy that showed that pop music could be intelligent, and dynamic and musically adventurous, and that it could change and grow.
There’s never been anyone with a career like his. No one. Like someone who was able to be such a pop success that was playing music that was so sophisticated, and the songwriting was so masterful, and he was beautiful looking, you know? I mean, he did everything!”
4 FLEA IS SCARED OF READING ANTHONY KIEDIS’ BIOGRAPHY SCAR TISSUE
“I should read it but I’m scared. There were parts I read. One was about me, and I was like: ‘Oh, that’s nice.’ And then I picked up another part. It was something about me again.
And I was like: ‘That’s not cool, like, that’s not true!’ I was scared that I would read it and then things would offend me, and I’d be angry at Anthony.”
5 FLEA LOVES PIPI LONGSTOCKING
“She’s great! I read all those books when I was a kid. And I used to watch the films with my older daughter. There was an American remake from the 1980s, but I’d rather watched the old ones, the Swedish ones. I mean, the remake is not that bad, but not as good as the early Swedish ones.”
