Attention Grabbers

The Lonely Island heads to the big screen with Popstar. Here’s how the SNL digital-short kings plan to hold our attention for nearly two hours

They’ve joined forces with Judd Apatow…

The Lonely Island can claim responsibility for some of the catchiest hooks to invade TV airwaves in the past 10 years, from “Lazy Sunday” and “I’m on a Boat” to the Emmy-winning “Dick in a Box.” Meanwhile, Apatow has built a film empire directing hits like The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Trainwreck.

This time, Schaffer and Taccone split directorial duties while Apatow steps in as producer on his first mockumentary. They’re hoping that the collaboration will be more fruitful than Hot Rod, which some people consider the first Lonely Island film (although the group didn’t actually pen the script).

And enlisted a zillion celebrity co-stars…

In the film, singer Conner4Real (Samberg) must reunite with his former rap group, the Style Boyz, to resuscitate his career after his second solo album tanks.

Conner4Real’s 32-person payroll includes a smattering of SNL veterans—Sarah Silverman as his publicist, Tim Meadows as his manager, Bill Hader as his roadie and Will Forte as his bagpiper—not to mention a basketball coach, unicorn handler and fall guy.

Musicians like Snoop Dogg, Usher, Pink and Questlove each add an authentic Behind the Music vibe.

For a film that should result in a sick soundtrack…

Between 2009 and 2013, the Lonely Island released three albums—Incredibad, Grammy-nominated Turtleneck & Chain and The Wack Album. Justin Timberlake, Norah Jones, T-Pain, Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, Akon, Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga and Michael Bolton are just some of the performers who lent their vocals to the various tracks. Since Popstar was written by the Lonely Island, expect a worthwhile sampling of new songs.

The Lonely Island have been friends since school

Andy Samberg
Samberg accepted a place in the 2005 SNL cast only when the show agreed to hire Schaffer and Taccone as writers. Now Samberg cuffs bad guys on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, a role that won him a Golden Globe in 2014.

Akiva Schaffer
Schaffer previously directed the Samberg vehicle Hot Rod (2007) and 2012’s The Watch, an ensemble flick that co-starred Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill as neighborhood sleuths.
Jorma Taccone
In The Last of the Lost (2009) Taccone shared the screen with Will Ferrell. The following year he directed MacGruber, a film homage to the ’80s TV series MacGyver.
