21 Jump Street meets Men in Black. Sony Pictures is planning to unleash this explosive combination on film audiences. The sensational news was released into the public domain after a hacker attack on the internal mail of the production company.
The only major downer: while Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill will probably be there, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones will not. They are to be replaced by others agents from the Men in Black universe for the project under the title MIB 23. So what can the makers expect to pull out of this experiment? Bringing together two of the funniest action franchises in film history, the potential is unlimited.
This has got us thinking. Are there any other Hollywood winning combinations out there? Here’s a list of buddy movie crossovers we think the films studios should give serious thought to bringing to our screens.
Ted + Hangover
The eternal stoner teddy bear and his buddy John (Mark Wahlberg) on tour with the ageing party animals? That should be fun, right? Finding absurd story ideas wouldn’t be a problem for the scriptwriters of these Hollywood smash hits. Throw in more cameos from Flash Gordon and Mike Tyson, and literally anything could happen.
In Bruges + Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson alongside the four shady buddies from the Guy Ritchie film? Could thrills, tragedy, humour and action ever be so closely combined with these two iconic capers?
Bonus question: How would the ill-tempered gangster boss Harry Walters (Ralph Fiennes) and Big Chris (Vinnie Jones) get along? Unfortunately, some characters have already seen their on-screen demise, but no doubt something could be done with some cinematic trickery.
White Men Can’t Jump + Bad Boys
The loud-mouthed Billy Hoyle (Woody Harrelson) and his partner Sydney Deane (Wesley Snipes) in a film with the detectives Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence). This one is bound to be an explosion of cool catchphrases and brotherly disagreements. You could rely on the Miami drug agents to make sure the two basketball junkies stayed on the right path but how would they fare in two-on-two on the basketball court?
Lethal Weapon + Starsky and Hutch
Retro meets retro. Mel Gibson and Danny Glover from the 1980’s team up with the 1970s-inspired Stiller and Wilson. It’s got buddy-cop action written all over it. Martin Riggs’ mullet would give David Starsky’s perm a run for its money, but when it comes to the car it’s best to take the Ford Gran Torino over Murtaugh’s family station wagon. And think of the possible co-stars; Joe Pesci, Chris Rock, Will Ferrell, and Snoop Dogg. Hollywood, do it!
Wayne’s World + Dumb and Dumber
Could the world actually handle Wayne Campbell (Mike Myers) and Garth Algar (Dana Carvey) meeting Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) and Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels)? Cable TV show Wayne’s World would gain two equally bad-haired hosts but would a road trip to Aspen, Colarado involve the blue AMC Pacer with go-faster flames or the Mutts Cutts dog van? Cue the Scooby-Doo ending.
