The coolest father-son teams in Hollywood
Astonishingly, acting legend Kirk Douglas celebrated his 100th anniversary in early December and his equally famous son Michael threw a big party for him. Other father-son duos might not have been in Hollywood as long as these two elder statesmen of the silver screen, but they’ve done the family name proud nonetheless.
Kirk and Michael Douglas
Kirk Douglas is a living legend. Born in 1916, he was a part of the golden age of Hollywood, shining in classics like Paths of Glory, Spartacus, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Despite several nominations, an Academy Award alluded him, but in 1996, the native New Yorker was bestowed an honorary Oscar. His son Michael Douglas was more successful in this respect. The still-active actor has already received two golden statues for his starring role in Wall Street and as a producer of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
By the way, Michael’s son Cameron is also an actor and has joined his father and grandfather on screen in the appropriately named It Runs in the Family.
Jerry and Ben Stiller
Jerry Stiller has been a successful actor since the 1960s. He began his career with his wife Anne Meara as the comedy duo “Stiller and Meara”. Later, he landed the role as Frank Costanza in the cult sitcom Seinfeld before playing the grumpy father Arthur in US hit The King of Queens. His son Ben Stiller has definitely inherited his pop’s comedic talent. He scored box-office smashes with movies like Meet the Parents and has even teamed up with his dad in the fan-favourite Zoolander.
Donald and Kiefer Sutherland
Yet another father-son team who’ve been stirring up Hollywood for years is Donald and Kiefer Sutherland. The senior starred in classics like The Dirty Dozen and MASH, and has in recent years featured in hits such as The Italian Job, Cold Mountain, and The Hunger Games. In 2015, he worked with his son Kiefer for the first time in the film Forsaken. Of course, Sutherland Junior is otherwise known as the cool-under-pressure Jack Bauer from the action series 24, as well as a star of films such as Stand by Me and Young Guns.
Martin Sheen, Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez
Two more famous sons featured alongside Kiefer Sutherland in Young Guns: Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez, the kids of Hollywood royalty Martin Sheen. Celebrated for his role in Apocalypse Now and featuring in films like Gandhi and Gettysburg, Sheen’s part as US President Josiah Bartlet in TV favourite The West Wing became legendary. The two sons with different last names (Charlie adopted the stage name of his father, Emilio retained the family name) were associated with the so-called Brat Pack scene in the ’80s and quickly made headlines in Hollywood. Emilio became particularly known for roles in The Breakfast Club and St. Elmo’s Fire, while Charlie became a superstar for turns in films like Platoon and Hot Shots, and hit sitcom Two and a Half Men despite several scandals off screen.
Tom and Colin Hanks
What else is there to say about Tom Hanks? Philadelphia, Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan, The Green Mile, Castaway - the list of classics with him in the lead role is endless. While his son Colin has some catching up to do, the younger Hanks is well on the way himself. In recent years, especially in TV, the Hollywood heir has demonstrated his acting chops with parts in Mad Men, Dexter and Fargo.
