Remarkably, there’s no place for Stallone and Schwarzenegger among the top three

Action movies have everything a man’s heart desires: spectacular stunts, outrageous explosions and a no-nonsense protagonist. Most of the time, our one-man armies have to wade through hordes of enemy foot soldiers with nothing but a machine gun and a blood-stained vest to save the day.

But which action star boasts the highest on-screen body count? The writers at Screenrant have analysed hours upon hours of movies and created a ranking based on the number of kills.

Train like a movie stuntman

"You could be able to do an Ironman triathlon but still struggle at the aerial work with a harness and wires, because it involves isolating completely different muscle groups," Malm explains. "Dancers will find it much easier looking graceful in the air."

The top 10 deadliest action stars

10 - Tomisaburo Wakayama

Body Count: 668

You may not have heard of Tomisaburo Wakayama, but this Japanese actor appeared in over 150 films before his death in 1992. With 668 kills to his name, he leaves established action stars like Chuck Norris (458) and Jean-Claude van Damme (457) trailing in his wake. Wakayama made his name in the Lone Wolf and Cub series, where he played a scowling, samurai-wielding 19th century ronin warrior, Itto Ogami, and left more than 600 opponents biting the dust.

9 - Jason Statham

Body Count: 706

Brit Jason Statham not only has the steely body of a killer, but has also mastered several martial arts skills. His on-screen killing spree began in earnest with the Transporter franchise in 2002, and he has also seen off enemies in the Crank and Fast & Furious series. He dished out 348 of his beatings as Lee Christmas in the Expendables trilogy.

8 - Steven Seagal

7 - Sylvester Stallone

Body Count: 786

As Rocky Balboa, Sly Stallone beat his opponents with his gloved fists within the confines of a boxing ring. But it was as John Rambo in the Rambo franchise that Stallone racked up the body count. In the first outing, 1982’s First Blood, he killed just one opponent, however in the fourth film he saw off 252 enemies.

6 - Chow Yun-Fat

Body Count: 810

Chow Yun-Fat has starred in more than 120 films. It was his frequent collaborations with director John Woo, that saw the Asian actor become an established action star. Yun-Fat was particularly trigger-happy when he worked with Woo, getting rid of 329 on-screen enemies. His deadliest film (108 kills) is the ironically-titled Peace Hotel.

5 - Arnold Schwarzenegger

Body Count: 829

This list just wouldn’t feel right if the former Governor of California and Terminator star didn’t make an appearance. However, rather surprisingly, Arnie only manages to scrape fifth place. Presumably, this can be put down to him branching out from the testosterone-fuelled world of action movies into wacky comedies when his star shone brightest in the 1990s.

4 - Dolph Lundgren

Body Count: 919

If you think that Dolph Lundgren is only ranked fourth because of his performances in The Expendables, you’re very much mistaken. Since 1985, he has starred in more than 80 films, with more lined up in 2017 and 2018 for the 59-year-old Swede. Perhaps his most memorable onscreen kill was - spoiler alert - Apollo Creed in Rocky IV.

3 - Jet Li

Body Count: 1,076

Before Jet Li made his Hollywood debut in Lethal Weapon 4, the Wushu expert had already featured in 25 Chinese films. The film where he reached his highest kill count was The Warlords, with more than 100 enemies dispatched.

2 - Milla Jovovich

Body Count: 1,292

The only woman in this list, Milla Jovovich sits in an impressive second place ahead of some stellar names. This is mainly due to her appearances in the Resident Evil series, in Resident Evil: Afterlife and Resident Evil: Retribution alone, she saw off nearly 1,000 mostly mutant enemies. This doesn’t even include the last part of the saga, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.

1 - Jimmy Wang Yu

Body Count: 2477

Like others on this list, the undisputed champion is also from Asia. Though he’s rather unknown in this country, Jimmy Wang Yu is famous on his home continent for his extensive use of a samurai sword rather than machine guns and sawn-off shotguns on the big screen. His films with his biggest kill counts are Invincible Sword (286) and Golden Swallow (193).
