You might not have heard a lot of rock music from Georgia before, but it’s about time to change that since there are more and more exciting talents emerging on the scene. One of them is Young Georgian Lolitaz.
The Tbilisi-based quartet’s melancholic and snappy indie songs might call British bands such as The Smiths or Franz Ferdinand to mind. In May, Young Georgian Lolitaz will represent Georgia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 with the song “Midnight Gold”. Here, their frontman Nika Kocharov reveals the favourite corners of his hometown.
Where is the best place to go for food in Tbilisi?
There are new restaurants in Tbilisi that serve Georgian traditional food in a civilized way. Having said that, you might want to eat national food the way locals do, for example, eat Khinkali with your bare hands trying not to spill the soup inside the dumpling. Khinkali must be the most complicated food in Georgian cuisine. Lot of thought goes into eating, what seems to be a simple dumpling.
A fun fact about your city not many people know?
Tbilisi held the first major rock ‘n’ roll festival in USSR in 1980. At the time controversial bands – now legends – from all over the country all performed in Tbilisi for one week.
The best place to go for good music…?
I can only recommend clubs where they have live music, especially rock ‘n’ roll, and indie rock. Only place that I can think of is Riffer bar. It’s an underground club in the city centre, but hard to find. Ask a local for directions if necessary.
Which drink is a must?
Georgia is known for its wine, so I guess you should visit a wine shop and try as much different wine as you physically can.

How should I get around the city?
Walking probably is the best choice, especially if the weather is good. Second choice is taxi because there are a lot of hills.
