Zara Larsson - “REACH FOR THE STARS”Swedish pop princess Zara Larsson sets the bar extremely high. She explains why you have to aim for the very top if you want your career to take off
Most 18-year-olds are just happy to pass their exams and finish school.
My motto is: if you can reach for the stars, why settle for less? If you separate your dreams from your goals, you’re limiting yourself.
But doesn’t it make better sense to have realistic goals?
There’s no such thing as an unrealistic goal. If other people can get a number one hit in the US and sell out stadiums, why can’t I?
But setting goals very high increases the risk of failing, don’t you think?
No, I don’t think like that. I don’t have to be the biggest superstar tomorrow. I know it will take time. If my next single is not working, I’ll move on to the next one. And I’ll keep on doing that until things work. That’s the way I see it. To me my career is more of a process. Patience and hard work are the keys to success.
At what point in life did you pick up such a strong career ambition?
I don’t know where it comes from. What I’m doing now is all I wanted to do my whole life. I’ve been dreaming about this since I was a kid, and I’ve always liked to win. I always wanted to come first place. I’m a pretty sore loser. If I do something then I want to be the best at it. I think it’s part of my personality.
Did your parents put you under a lot of pressure when you grew up?
My family have always been very supportive. Nobody has pushed me to do this. This what I want to do with my life and I want to prove to myself that I can constantly do better. My biggest idol is Beyoncé. In my opinion she is the greatest performer alive. When you look up to someone like her, you’re like, ‘I want to have a sold out world tour, too!’ It’s about working extremely hard, because Beyoncé’s not slacking.
What’s the downside of being very ambitious?
I’m never fully satisfied. I can never just release a song and be like, ‘what a great song, I’m just going to enjoy this for a moment.’ I immediately want to move on to the next one and do an even better one. I’m hungry for more all the time, but at the same time it can be pretty sad sometimes, because I never actually enjoy the things I do. So sometimes I have to sit down and remind myself of the great things that are happening to me.
