Tower of London, England

If such a thing as celebrity ghosts exist, the most famous probably reside at the Tower of London. The headless spirit of Anne Boleyn, the former wife of King Henry VIII, is said to wander the halls ever since she was beheaded by her husband in 1536.

Even Jane Grey, once the Queen of England for a very short time, has been spotted hundreds of years after her decapitation. However eyewitnesses’ most common sightings are of two children in their nightgowns who walk holding hands through the cold corridors. They are said to be two princes who were executed by order of their uncle, the Duke of Gloucester.

Banff Springs Hotel, Alberta, Canada

Many horror fans will know the Stanley Hotel in Colorado as the inspiration for Stephen King’s The Shining. But a terrifying tale from the Banff Springs, built more than 125 years ago, ranks even higher on the spook scale. A family was believed to be killed in the accursed room 873 and, despite the door being sealed off, their spirits still roam the building.

Eyewitnesses also claim to have seen a burning bride dancing in the hotel ballroom. The story goes that her dress caught fire on a candle as she climbed the stairs, and as she tripped she broke her neck in the fall. Even today, the spirit of the former bellman Sam McCauley is said to switch lights on and off, open locked doors, and lead guests to their rooms. But if you try to give him a tip, he disappears.

Island of Dolls, Xochimilco, Mexico

Legend says that in the 1920s a girl drowned as she was playing with her two girlfriends on “La Isla de la Munecas”. Ever since, locals believe that her spirit cannot leave the island. In 1950 a man named Julian Santan Barrera moved to the island and claimed that the girl had appeared to him. He began to buy dolls for her to play with.

Julian told his nephew that the girl’s greed for dolls continued to grow and that he believed the spirit would lure him to a watery grave. Later the same day, his nephew found his uncle lying lifelessly in a canal in the same spot where the girl had drowned 70 years earlier.

Footsteps and the cries of patients are constantly heard in the empty corridors of the former sanatorium while the alleged sudden temperature drops only add to the goosebumps.

Hoia Baciu Forest, Transylvania, Romania

Transylvania is not only known as the home of Count Dracula. The myths that have grown up around the Hoia Baciu Forest are much more sinister. The trees there seem to twist strangely skyward or grow unnaturally, while legend says a shepherd and his flock of 200 animals once simply disappeared.

Another story tells the tale of a little girl who disappeared. She showed up again five years later wearing the same clothes without having aged a single day. She was found in the middle of the forest in a circular clearing where no trees grow, leading to fables of a portal to a different dimension.
