TESLA MODEL 3: THE FUTURE IS NOW
On the day the Model 3 electric car was announced by Tesla, the company started taking deposits for the vehicle. It received 134,000 reservations within 24 hours – each deposit is $1,000 – and by the end of the third day, that number had reached 276,000. But why the hype?
AN ‘AFFORDABLE’ ELECTRIC CAR
Tesla first showed that electric cars could work when they released their Roadster version. Now they’re trying to bring greener driving to the mass market with the Model 3 being priced at an ‘affordable’ $35,000. Can it save the world? It certainly looks the part…
Musk has said that the Model 3 will achieve a range of 215 miles, but that this is a minimum number and engineers are still working to improve this.
The vehicle will also come with autonomous autopilot software and safety features such as emergency braking as standard. You’ll have to pay extra for the complete autopilot programme though, which includes lane keeping with auto-steer and self-parking.
“LIKE A SPACESHIP”
Responding on Twitter, Musk said that the “real steering controls and system” for the Model 3 will be “like a spaceship,” and that the steering wheel set-up seen in the model at the media event was not the final version. The car will not even have a traditional dashboard and cluster of instruments. We’re intrigued. Expect part two of the Model 3 unveiling – closer to the time of production – to make sense of this.
IT FITS A SEVEN-FOOT LONG SURFBOARD
Yes, apparently someone did ask Musk if this was possible, and yes, Musk answered that this was the case. The car can sit five adults and the company maintains that it does this comfortably with legroom. Luggage areas are also available in the front and back. Nice. That the rear roof is one continuous pane of glass promising a feeling of openness is also kind of cool.
“WE DON’T MAKE SLOW CARS”
One of the main problems with electric cars is that they generally have the image of being slow, but Tesla wants to change that. They want their machines to go fast and so the Model 3 will have the power to accelerate from 0-60mph in under six seconds. Seen as this is the basic version of the vehicle and that the company has promised other models, you can expect things to get even faster.
IT’S COMING IN 2017
Or at least Tesla is confident that this is when the Model 3 car will be released to the mass market. Will it make the company the electric car powerhouse and help it to save the planet? The number of pre-orders makes it clear that they’ve got a good chance.
