5th place: Auckland, New Zealand

You’ll find some beautiful beaches dotted around the New Zealand city and if you’re looking to surf, seek out the black sand strands on the western coast.

Best booking period: According to Kayak, airfare to Auckland is cheapest when you book 3 months in advance. You pay less for your hotel from May to July, but then again, the temperatures are at their lowest. The best time to go is in March when it’s still warm and hotels are cheaper by comparison.

Place 4: Phuket, Thailand

It should be no surprise that Phuket with its beautiful paradise setting emerges on this list. If you prefer something a little quieter, you should pay a visit to Mai Khao and Pansea beaches.

Best booking period: Three months prior to departure. If you prefer warm temperatures, it’s best to travel between April and June. That’s when hotel prices are most favourable, according to Kayak.

3rd place: Guadeloupe

Guadeloupe consists of eight inhabited and several uninhabited islands which all belong to France, hence why national football team players like Thierry Henry and Kingsley Coman can trace their roots there. In addition to the sun and beaches, the overseas territory offers a special highlight: from New Year to Ash Wednesday, Carnival is celebrated, combining local and French traditions.

Best booking period: It’s cheapest when you book at relatively short notice. You can get a hotel room at a comparatively small price between May and October. In the remaining months of the year, the weather is more pleasant than hot, with less precipitation.

Place 2: Martinique, Caribbean

Martinique is another popular destination in the same neighbourhood as Guadeloupe. The water temperature around the Caribbean island is always above 26 degrees Celsius and in April, it hosts the water festival which includes colourful parades and sailing shows.

Best booking period: Book your flight shortly before your trip. Hotels will charge your wallet the least amount in May and June.

Place 1: Maui, Hawaii

The second largest Hawaiian island has come out in first place in Kayak’s rankings. In the mornings, you can swim or dive alone in the crystal-clear waters off the north shore, as windsurfers are only allowed into the water after 11 am.

Best booking period: Apart from December to February, the hotel prices are relatively constant all year round.
