The hottest movie babes of the 1990s you’ve totally forgotten about
Jennifer Aniston, Michelle Pfeiffer and Sharon Stone are names synonymous with beauty and 1990s glamour. But for every household name of the 1990s, there are 10 more generational pin-ups who have since been all but forgotten – and unjustly so.
Swanson’s performance in 1990’s Buffy The Vampire Slayer inspired the TV series of the same name, but she was too old to play a student by the time it hit the small screen. Regardless, the original Buffy looked set for certain stardom but never broke into the upper echelon. She continues to work in TV, mostly in guest roles, but her biggest big screen achievements are limited to Dude Where’s My Car and Big Daddy.
As bass-playing frontwoman Cassandra, Tia Carrere became the fantasy of teenagers and adults the world over after the success of the 1992 Mike Myers comedy, Wayne’s World. She backed it up in the sequel a year later and went on to secure a supporting role in action film, True Lies in 1994. Then there’s the hard-to-forget seduction scene in otherwise forgettable film My Teacher’s Wife. But she’s largely been exclusive to TV and small budget films since, apart from her voice work on animated films like Lilo & Stitch.
The London-born model-turned-actress continues to play guest roles in everything from Stargate SG-1 and Californication to Entourage and Saving Grace, but she still remains best known for her 1990s work. Angel was the star of the 1990s TV reboot of Weird Science and starred alongside Woody Harrelson and Bill Murray in Kingpin, a cult Farrelly Brothers comedy from 1996.
For a period during the second half of the 1990s, it was almost impossible to see a movie without Mira Sorvino in some capacity, such was the streak she was on following her Golden Globe win for supporting actress in Woody Allen’s Mighty Aphrodite in 1995. She went on to star in Romy & Michelle’s High School Reunion, Replacement Killers, Mimic, Summer of Sam, and she received more Golden Globe nominations for her role as Marilyn Monroe in biopic Norma Jean & Marilyn. Sorvino has long since been overlooked as a leading actress in major films, but she did receive a Golden Globe nomination for her role in 2005 US TV mini-series, Human Trafficking.
Best known as Shauni McClain in Baywatch, former Playboy playmate Erika Eleniak could do no wrong in the early 1990s. She starred alongside Steven Seagal in Under Siege and in the big screen adaptation of The Beverly Hillbillies. But since then, she’s largely been relegated to small budget films and reality TV roles.
The former Miss Teen USA looked destined to follow the same career trajectory as the likes of Rene Russo when she emerged as the breakout star of Billy Madison in the early ’90s. She starred in everything from Total Recall and Mortal Kombat to I Know What You Did Last Summer. But before she really got a chance to shine and craft her skills, she married tennis king Pete Sampras in 2000 and basically disappeared for five years. Then came a stellar appearance in 2005’s Shopgirl alongside Steve Martin and Jason Schwartzman. But then she vanished again in 2008.
