My top five sporting heroes

England all-rounder Stuart Broad reveals some of the sportsmen that have inspired him over the years

1Martin Johnson
I’m a Leicester Tigers fan, but I also respect Martin for the way he led his troops. He always looked like he wanted to throw the first punch and sometimes he literally did!

2Stuart Pearce
I am also a Nottingham Forest fan, and again I think a lot of the sportsmen that are heroes of mine are guys who played with a lot of passion. You could never look at them and say, “I wish I was in their position because they’re not trying.” They are guys who wore their heart on their sleeves. Stuart Pearce is a Nottingham Forest legend, and the way he played his football was something I always admired.

3Glen McGrath and 4 Shaun Pollock
These two are my two cricketing heroes. The discipline and the aggressive intent they had when they bowled is something I always admired. It’s a bit of a shame that I didn’t have any real English bowlers as heores, but I think as a kid you’re influenced by winning teams.

5Lewis Moody
He was always a guy that I loved following as a kid and as an adult. He was a flanker who always put his body on the line. He’d always have a new cut or a scar on his face, a little memory of his last battle on the pitch. He was an Oakham schoolboy like me so when someone’s been to your school you follow them with a bit more interest.
