6 facts about the fight of the year!
The 2nd of May will be a day many boxing fans will never forget. The biggest fight of the year will take place in Las Veges between Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, and it looks set to break records left, right and centre.
“This is the biggest boxing event of all time. It is going to be a spectacular evening for the world of sport and for broadcasters,” said Ken Hershman, president of HBO sports, who will be showing the match alongside Showtime on TV.
To get you in the mood for the fight, we have answered some of the most important questions:
How much money is involved?
There will be almost 400 million dollars in play when these two step into the ring on Saturday. Mayweather will be earning 60% of the revenue while Pacquiao will earn 40%. An interesting fact – Mayweather will become the first boxer to earn 1 billion dollars through fights.
How much do the tickets cost?
You are going to have to dig deep into your pockets if you want to see this one live in the flesh. The cheapest tickets are going for a cool $1,500, and the most expensive are clocking in at $10,000. Want to be ringside? Then you are going to need a credit of $250,000 at the MGM to even have the chance of getting tickets. Overall, tickets sales are expected to bring in around $74 million.
Where can I watch the fight?
If you’re in the UK then you will be able to watch this fight on Sky Sports pay per view for £19.95 with the fight starting at 4am on Sunday morning. HBO and Showtime have the rights in USA and it will cost a little bit more, $99 for the HD coverage to be exact.
What are the stars saying?
Even the biggest stars are in boxing fever, and plenty of them have their favourites and are not afraid to let it be known. 50 Cent has even gone a step further by betting a decent chunk of money on Mayweather. “I am putting $1,6 million on Mayweather, because he has been waiting so long for this fight that he can’t lose.” 50 Cent would end up making $700,000 profit on his bet. Teenie-star Justin Bieber is also on Mayweather’s side. Sylvester Stallone on the other hand is on Pacquiao ‘s side. “He’s the best, and he is going to win,” said the Rocky star. Hollywood stars Mark Wahlberg and Liam Neeson are also on Pacquiao ‘s team.
Who will be introducing the fighters?
Michael “Let’s get ready to rumble” Buffer will introduce Pacquiao, Jimmy “It’s Showtime” Lennon Junior will introduce Mayweather. The last time these two were in the same ring together was in 2002 when Lennox Lewis took on Mike Tyson.
What are they fighting for?
In a nutshell - it is about who is the best pound-for-pound boxer of their generation. They will be boxing in the Welterweight category on Saturday. The winner will take three World Champion belts home with them in the WBC, WBA (both Mayweather) and WBO (Pacquiao) catergories.
