Choosing the perfect surf-city getaway can throw up difficult choices. Do you search for a destination that offers perfect waves, but not much else? Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

A tropical climate and one of the most impressive cityscapes on the planet - what more do you want? How about high waves and a refreshing Caipirinha drink in view of Christ the Redeemer and the Sugarloaf? In addition to its status as the surfing centre of Brazil, Rio is also considered the party capital of the country. Whether in a modern club or at a samba session, you can dance until dawn surrounded by beautiful people.

Honolulu, Hawaii

The capital of Hawaii and, with one million inhabitants, the largest city, Honolulu is the perfect surf-nightlife hybrid destination. And when the sun goes, the evenings come to life.

Cape Town, South Africa

A surfing trip to Cape Town is always worthwhile for the fantastic waves that can be tackled almost every day of the year. The reefs at Kalk Bay and Dungeons are not to be missed while you have to explore the beaches and area around Table Mountain. Then you can party the night away in the metropolis regarded as the creative centre of South Africa in a huge number of different bars and clubs which attract locals and tourists alike.
