What it is: Ashtanga (Vinyasa) Yoga is based on ancient yoga teachings, brought to the Western World by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in the 1970s. It’s a very physically demanding, rigorous style of yoga, that synchronizes breathing with a progressive and continuous series of postures.
Need to know: Ashtanga is an athletic yoga practice, that can be quite challenging for beginners, but easy to get into, as it always performs the exact same poses in the exact same order. The result is improved flexibility, circulation, stamina, a stronger body and a calmer mind.
What it is: Bikram Yoga was developed by Bikram Choudhury, a gold medal Olympic weight lifter in 1963, where 26 poses are performed in a room set at a temperature of 40 degrees (like Ashtanga, it always follows the same sequences). This yoga style is a comprehensive workout that includes the building-up of muscular strength, endurance and cardiovascular flexibility, as well as weight loss.
Need to know: Due to the heat, flexibility gets promoted, which furthermore leads to a better prevention of injuries. The high amount of sweat you loose [prepare yourself to be dripping with sweat!] during the 90-minute class also accelerates a higher detoxification effect.
What it is: Hatha Yoga is the base of all Western yoga methods, as it is used as a generic term for yoga styles, that teach physical postures (asanas), in combination with controlled breathing (pranayama) and includes a meditational aspect as a source of stress management. In other words: if hatha is the ice-cream, styles like Bikram or Ashtanga are the topping.
Need to know: When a class is referred to as hatha, it usually means that you can expect a gentle introduction to the most basic yoga postures, making it an easy-to-learn basic form of yoga. You should end up leaving the class more relaxed, looser and with a better posture.
What it is: Hot Yoga is basically the same as Bikram but you can expect the hot yoga classes to deviate a little from the Bikram sessions. Why? Due to copyright reasons… Get ready for the same hot, sweaty and wet experience as in Bikram.
Need to know: If your focus is on weight-loss, but also building better stamina, yoga in an artifically heated room is the style you are looking for. You will burn up to 650 calories per class, whole building stamina.
What it is: Power yoga is a very active and athletic style of yoga, that will make your muscles burn. The American adaption of Ashtanga yoga takes the usual Ashtanga routine a step further by including basic calisthenics such as push-ups, handstands, toe touches and side bends and by mixing up these poses in the sessions.
Need to know: The isometric movements recruit every muscle in the body, making your metabolism spark and results in a higher amount of burned calories per session. The key to Power yoga is the intense pace: instead of pausing in between the poses (as you would in traditional yoga), each move connects with the next. If a class is marked with “power”, you can generally expect an intense aerobic stretch workout.
What it is: Vinyasa means “flow“ in Sanskrit, making it a style that especially focusses on very fluid, and intense practices, where the continuous movement stands in the foreground.
Need to know: The breath-synchronized-movement of Vinyasa is a very physical form of yoga, similar to Ashtanga, but not class is the same. The poses are smoothly flowing in an almost-dance like way, which explains why it is sometimes referred to as Vinyasa Flow or just Flow yoga.
