Who can forget that legendary penalty from Roberto Baggio in the 1994 World Cup which soared into the Pasadena skies? (watch the video here) Or how Johann Cruyff and one of the most talented team of individuals ever to grace a World Cup failed to win the title in 1974? 

There have been many heroes over the years, many of them tragic. They shot, dribbled and tackled their hearts out, but still went home empty handed.

We have compiled a star-studded list of nearly men, for which the saying “so close, yet so far away” has never been more fitting.
