You’re on the first date but things aren’t quite going according to plan. You might be tempted to be a bit more risqué or direct in your approach. But no matter how bad you think things are going, there are some things you should avoid saying at all costs. Here they are.

Picture the scene: you’ve been texting the object of your affection every day since you first met each other on a night out a few weeks back. Initially, things go swimmingly as each sentence you utter sounds like it’s been plucked one of Shakespeare’s sonnets and it seems that nothing can go wrong as you look to seal the deal with a kiss.

But before indulging in a spot of tongue tennis, you interrupt them: “It’s really funny, you really remind me of my ex.” Ouch! This ill-timed bombshell kills your chances of that all-important second date.

Here are six more scenarios you should look to avoid on a first day. Choose your words carefully.

One of basic rules of a first date is to avoid giving the impression you’re some kind of sociopathic stalker. Saying you’ve spent the last few days eyeing up someone’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts won’t flatter them – on the contrary, it will probably freak them out. Therefore you should avoid admitting to this, even if it’s true.

“Let’s get the bill and head back to my house to get steamy”
The sleaze-bag

Feel free to sparingly use innuendo and other cheeky phrases, but you should reign in any direct references to sexy-time. Otherwise, you may have to dry yourself down with the hand-dryer in the nearest toilet, as you can expect to get a glass of water thrown in your face.

“You have quite the appetite!”

No matter how much your date eats, you shouldn’t make any reference to it if you’re hoping to seem them again – even if they’re reaching for your spaghetti leftovers before you’ve decided if you’ve even finished your meal.

“I really want children, do you?”

Woah, easy tiger! It may be that your date has visions of skipping through a field of daisies with her future husband and three or four kids. There’s no guarantee she wants to do that with you, though, and this is probably a decision that will come about after months and years of getting to know one another slowly. Don’t run before you can walk – focus on nailing down a second date first!

Given rising house prices and the cost of living, not everyone has the luxury of living away from home, so most people will sympathise with you if you’re still living with your parents. That said, it’s not exactly the biggest turn-on, so you shouldn’t use a first encounter to go shouting it from the rooftops.

“This place is really boring and I can’t stand the music. Shall we go somewhere else?”
The party-pooper

You’ve finished the meal and your date has suggested going to a favourite cocktail bar to get to know each other in a more relaxed setting. Great! Except when you’re there, you find the music’s too loud and the drinks aren’t to your taste.

Whatever you do, don’t voice any negativity. Focus on positives, such as how well the date’s going, so you can secure a second one. Next time, you get to decide the bar.
