We hone in on the Marvel Cinematic Universe to bring you some of the toughest, smuggest and downright boss-man moments spanning the entire franchise.

Some of the most beloved, visually dazzling moments in modern filmmaking occur when heroes confront the bad guy with a swift punch, smash, blast or occasional lightning bolt to the face. However, many of the slickest takedowns present themselves when the hero puts down the weapon and cranks up the smack talk. You know the one-liners, the dialogue so sharp you wish the character had a microphone handy to punctuate their quip with a mic drop.

We looked at some of the most deserving verbal quips, jabs and backhands the Marvel universe has to offer, judging them on cleverness and overall impact. Let’s assemble the top five:

5. Phil Coulson vs Tony Stark, Ironman 2

Agent Coulson? Really? Phil from S.H.I.E.L.D? Damn right.
“If you try to escape, or play any sort of games with me, I will taze you and watch Supernanny while you drool into the carpet.” Now, with a badass threat like that, this mic-drop moment could’ve been the mic-drop moment to end all mic-drop moments. But this exchange with Tony Stark winds up at number five on the list due to a weak delivery. Oh well, they made Coulson feel better by giving him his own spin-off show that even Marvel fans forgot exists…

4. Loki vs Black Widow, The Avengers

This next mic-drop moment between Loki and Black Widow in The Avengers speaks for itself: “I won’t touch Barton. Not until I make him kill you first. Slowly, intimately, in every way he knows you fear. And then he’ll wake just long enough to see his good work, and when he screams, I’ll split his skull! This is my bargain, you mewling quim!” That is some of the most articulate, fanciful trash talk ever spoken in the MCU – if not film as we know it. Loki would definitely be a suitable sub if you were to be called out at slam poetry night. But to be fair, this might be even more of a mic-drop moment for writer Joss Whedon for sneaking in the word “quim” - the British equivalent of the C-word - into a family-friendly film. A mic drop made even more epic for counting on people to be ignorant enough not to pick up on it.

3.  Pepper Potts vs Tony Stark’s sidepiece, Ironman

Lothario Tony Stark has surely had his share of one-night stands, but he met his match with Pepper Potts. Starting off as Stark’s assistant and eventually being promoted to full-time CEO and love interest, she’s subservient to no one and in Ironman immediately shows us why she’s the one constant in Tony’s life – in her very first scene. When one of Tony’s flings throws shade her way, Pepper responds with this choice mic drop: “I do anything and everything Mr. Stark requires, including occasionally taking out the trash. Will that be all?”

2. Hulk vs Loki, The Avengers

The Hulk finally becomes fun to watch in the first Avengers film when he grabs Loki by the leg and smashes him repeatedly into the ground. This moment officially catapulted Hulk as a scene-stealer and a character audiences couldn’t wait to see in action again. We mean, slinging a god around like a floppy garbage bag and then walking off like a champ to deliver the line “Puny god”… Give this man a giant green microphone so he can drop it.

1. Star-Lord staring in the face of certain death, Guardians of the Galaxy

This line has it all - it’s pompous, it’s climactic, it’s got a PG swear word, and it’s got the title of the movie in it! That’s right, our number one mic-drop moment belongs to Star-Lord from Guardians of the Galaxy, who in the face of death still has time to pull off a final zinger: “You said it yourself, bitch. We’re the guardians of the galaxy.” The number one pic may surprise, but no more than falling in love with a movie where two of the best characters are a tree and a raccoon.
