No one asked for it, but one look at all-new Baywatch trailer and it’s plain to see the film adaptation of the seminal 1990s Hoff vehicle is destined to be a hit regardless of critical consensus.

With franchise Viagra Dwayne “The Rock” John, Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario and Priyanka Chopra headlining, the cast reads like a People Magazine’s list of the world’s hottest people, putting perhaps even the original cast to shame. Let’s call it an even ledger.

Better yet, like previous TV-to-film adaptations such as Starsky and Hutch and 21 Jump Street, Baywatch has been given the full comic treatment, drawing distinct parallels to the latter, with cinematography reminiscent of Johnson’s HBO series, Ballers.

And if that’s not enough to convince you of it’s potential comic value, look no further than those who developed the script - Reno 911’s Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garrant, among others. While director Seth Gordon has plenty of comedy credits himself, the main man behind the lens on Horrible Bosses, Identity Thief and a host of sitcoms including The Office, Community, and Parks and Recreation.

Like the TV series, no plot is too far beyond belief, with Baywatch about to be shut down and Mitch Buchannan (the character made famous by David Hasselhoff – or vice versa – and played by Johnson) commissioning renegade Olympian Matt Brody (Efron in place of original David Charvet) to help solve a crime after a dead body shows up on their beach.
The movie’s set to drop May 2017. And a look at the credits suggests both The Hoff and Pamela Anderson will be making cameos.
