It’s great to earn a decent paycheck, but job satisfaction is down to more than just your take-home salary. As they say, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Many things can get you down about your role, from disagreements with your colleagues to feeling unchallenged or overburdened by work.

All we need is just a little respect, as Aretha Franklin once sang. Clearly, if you feel like you’re not getting enough of it for the work you do you won’t enjoy your job. You may think your ideas are being ignored in meetings or have an overbearing buffoon of a boss like Michael Scott.
Top tip: Get to know your colleagues better on a personal and professional level. Team lunches away from the office in a local restaurant are great for this. Team-building events never hurt when it comes to building trust either: why not try indoor rock-climbing or bowling after work some time?
Pimp your work
Dull tasks can be a real mood-kill and cause boredom to set in as your morale plummets. Work on engaging projects that will motivate you, and try new methods and approaches that play to your strengths.
Top tip: When asked to do something you don’t enjoy or you don’t feel works, develop some counter-proposals. In the next meeting with your line manager discuss alternative approaches. Even if they’re unconvinced, don’t be afraid to insist that your way would be more effective. Persistence is the key.
Sometimes a metaphorical grey cloud hovers over the office and everyone seems to be at each other’s throats. Every workplace atmosphere requires a booster shot of motivation once in a while – and you can provide it.
Top tip: Get out of the “bad mood loop”. Arrive in the morning with a smile on your face and be sure to say good morning to everyone. Use tea and coffee breaks to catch up with colleagues in less formal surroundings (even if it is only the office kitchen).

If life was just about work, we’d live in a pretty dull world, which is why it’s important to maintain a good work-life balance. Even if you’re feeling a little overworked from time-to-time, you shouldn’t neglect your social life.
Top tip: Though overtime is sometimes unavoidable, try not to make it a habit. Hit up the gym a few times a week, eat your greens and catch up with your mates down your local regularly.
