How to own Instagram with your travel pics

What’s the point in taking all that effort to get your travel photos Instagram-ready if nobody actually sees them? Here’s how to get your pics the likes they deserve.

Some views are simply too good not to share with the rest of the world. But amongst the millions of posts that pop up every day on your friends’ timelines, travel photos need to be extra-special to get noticed. Apply the following rules to make yours really stand out from the crowd. The rules are…

  • Quality
  • Honesty
  • Conciseness
  • Originality
  • Shamelessness

1 Quality over quantity

Less is more – a rule that always applies to your Instagram posts. That picturesque holiday sunset may look wonderful, but by the tenth photo of the same view, nobody’s impressed any more. Choose one shot that best represents the scene, and leave it at that.

Select a few pictures of highlights or key moments that summarise your journey, rather than bore people with every detail. A key advantage of this: when you return home, you won’t have spoiled all your unique travel stories on Instagram and will actually have something new to tell your friends.

2 Stick with the truth

Your followers will forgive you for using one of Instagram’s many filters to make a picture’s colours pop. But don’t overdo it. Nobody likes unnaturally Photoshop-smooth faces or that airbrushed six-pack you drew on with the latest photo-editing app.

3 Keep it short

Instagram users want to see a great picture, not read the novel-like caption you’ve written to accompany it. Keep it short and don’t go overboard by adding hundreds of hashtags. To make sure your travel photos are seen by those most likely to be interested in them, think outside the box and avoid bland hashtags such as #adventure, #travel or #funtimes.

4 Be original

So you’re in Paris? Instead of posting that obligatory selfie in front of the Eiffel Tower, how about finding a shot that shows the city from a new and original angle? Everyone’s seen the same old pictures of classic tourist hotspots a million times already – it’s the excitement of something new that really piques peoples’ interest. Pick subjects that are rarely photographed, or find a unique perspective that makes the virtual sightseeing trip that is Instagram stimulating again.

5 Don’t be shy

To get THE perfect photo, sometimes it takes a bit of time, effort and potentially embarrassing physical exertion. Rather than missing out on a one-in-a-million moment because there are people around you, just smile, ignore any potential mockery and get snapping. It’ll all be worth it when those likes start racking up.
