Don’t expect too much
Headache, nausea, dizziness - to sum it up, you’re not at your best after a night on the town. There are countless myths, old wives tales and secret recipes designed to rid you of that awful feeling inside your head after you have emptied one glass too many. The reality however is: don’t expect too much. Yes, you are more than likely just going to have to suffer through it. But despair not; there are some tricks that will help make life at least a little easier as you battle your way back into the land of the living.

Mix the ingredients, pour over ice, stir, add celery and lemon for decoration.
Hair of the dog? Probably not a great idea…
Hair of the dog has often been seen as the best way to get yourself back on the road to recovery, which isn’t exactly true. While it can help make you feel better in the short-term by alleviating alcohol withdrawal and increasing blood sugar levels, it isn’t a full-blown cure. In the long term you are simply extending the period of time needed for your body to completely flush the alcohol out of your system, which can result in you feeling even worse.
Try our Virgin Mary (left) instead of reaching for the alcohol. Herbal teas (peppermint especially), isotonic drinks and coconut water are all great at rehydrating your body after a night out. Coffee alone should be avoided, but an espresso with fresh lemon juice will help get rid of a nasty headache (WARNING - don’t try this if you have a weak stomach!)
Water, water and more water!
Water should be an ever-present companion on a night out if you want to function normally the next day. 1: Match every alcoholic drink with a glass of water. If you can’t do this, then make sure you drink a large glass before going to bed. 2: Drink at least one glass of water as soon as you wake up, regardless of how much you had the night before. 3: Get under the shower as soon as possible! A warm shower helps blood circulation and helps to freshen you up. 4: Keep drinking…water that is. You should drink a large glass of water at least 5 times over the course of the day in order to completely flush out the alcohol.
- 1 cup oatmeal
- 6 oz. milk
- A pinch of salt
- Topping: Nuts, Honey, Banana, fruits of choice
Slowly bring the oatmeal, cinnamon, salt and milk to the boil and stir continually for 5 minutes. Prepare the fruit and other ingredients, mix together in a bowl and enjoy.
The good-old hangover breakfast
A nutritious breakfast is key if you want to be back on your feet in no time flat. The most important word here is nutritious, not fatty. Fight your instincts and don’t listen to your belly, which will no doubt be crying out for a double bacon cheeseburger. What you need is something high in fiber that will satisfy your hunger without being too hard on your stomach.
Oatmeal with banana, nuts and honey provides you with everything your body needs. Bananas are an excellent souce of potassium that your body desperately needs after a hard night. Nuts and oatmeal are full of other essential minerals your body will be crying out for, including magnesium, sodium, iron and vitamin B6.
While you won’t feel 100%, you will at least be feeling a little bit more like yourself, and your belly will be thanking you for not submitting it to pizza and burgers.
Prevention instead of treatment
Going to be a late one tonight? Then make sure you prepare your body for the torture you’re about to submit it to and it may well thank you in the morning. The golden rule is NEVER DRINK ON AN EMPTY STOMACH. Fatty foods are the best at mopping up the alcohol you are about to consume. Try and avoid sweet food however, as sugar can increase the effects of alcohol. There is also too much of a good thing - eat too much before drinking and you may well pay the price later on in the evening, if you know what we mean. Hydration throughout the evening is also essential. Try and squeeze in a few glasses of water in between drinks to balance out the alcohol in your blood.
Feel like your head’s about to explode?
Don’t strain your liver even more by taking unneccesary headache tablets. Peppermint oil is just as effective. Simply massage a few drops on your temples and forehead and your headache will be gone with 10 to 15 minutes.
Get out of bed and enjoy the day! You will be amazed how much good a bit of movement and fresh air will do you, even if you don’t think you’re in the condition to get out of bed. We’re not telling you to do a gut-busting full-body workout, a short stroll will suffice to help clear your head and get the blood pumping once again. You’ll also feel better about not wasting the whole day in bed.
Unfortunately, as we mentioned earlier, there is no cure against the common hangover. But try out our tips, listen to some good music, watch an entertaining film, relax and maybe you will find the missing piece in your anti-hangover puzzle. And don’t worry, the world will look a lot better tomorrow!
