The Red Bulletin Podcast: How to Survive an Avalanche

Words: Andreas Tzortzis Photography: Mark Gallup/Red Bull Content Pool

Top big mountain snowboarder and star of the film The Fourth Phase, Travis Rice sets the bar higher—whether it’s in filmmaking or big air. But it doesn’t come without risk.

One of the world’s top snowboarders, Travis Rice has made a name by seeking out the unrideable and conquering mountains in the way, way back country.

For three years, Rice, a select group of top snowboarders and a film crew traveled to the far reaches of Japan and Russia and closer to home—Alaska, Wyoming—to capture the camraderie and high stakes of snowboarding where no one has before. In the Red Bulletin Podcast, he opens up about the limits of his quest to go bigger and further, and gives us an exclusive on surviving a brutal avalanche that took him under while filming.

For Rice, the avalanche only emphasized the necessity of preparation. A passionate advocate for mountain safety, the snowboarder works together with the Know Before You Go campaign, and produced this video around the incident and the lessons to be drawn from it.
