Former pro surfer Jon Rose was nearing the end of his career and heading towards a bleak future when an earthquake in Indonesia changed his life. 

Don’t call Jon Rose a humanitarian. The way he sees it, his charity Waves4Water - which brings cheap, easy-to-use water filtration systems to third-world countries - is just one chapter in his life: the current one. But if that’s the case then it’s an especially feel-good one following the end of a mediocre surfing career, financial security and a marriage. We talk to Rose about his life growing up a block from the beach in a one-room house with his father, the genesis of his humanitarian streak and why he no longer has a permanent address.
